Project Description
Project Goals:
The EU is collecting all data that can contribute to measurable emissions reductions in shipping in a novel system for monitoring, reporting and verification called the MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) system. For each commercial vessel, a monitoring plan already had to be submitted to an independent verifier in 2017. And since January 1, 2018, ship owners have been obliged to report the CO2 emissions of their ships when traveling to, from and within European waters of the EU. This includes not only the fuel consumption of the main engine, but also the consumption of auxiliary and ancillary equipment, water heating, and the like.
Objectives:
In order to support shipping companies in this task, the CML is therefore developing a new system as part of the EmissionSEA project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVI) together with Wismar University of Applied Sciences, the JAKOTA Design Group and the German Aerospace Center e.V. (DLR) under the project leader JAKOTA Cruise Systems, a software prototype for calculating CO2 emissions. This uses the ships' AIS data as well as information from the weather service to derive fuel consumption and emissions from speed and external influences. The results can thus serve as a reference parameter for the shipping companies' calculations.
Role of the CML in EmissionSEA:
Fraunhofer CML applies its competencies in Weather Routing and Big Data Analysis in EmissionSEA.
Project Consortium:
Wismar University of Applied Sciences, JAKOTA Design Group, German Aerospace Center e.V. (DLR), JAKOTA Cruise Systems (project leader) and Fraunhofer CML.
