"Captain AI" supports onshore with important decisions
In the CML's own Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) laboratory, real and experimental scenarios from shipping traffic and monitoring can be simulated.
Against the backdrop of the gradual integration of autonomous ships into existing shipping traffic (mixed shipping traffic), shore-based traffic monitoring is facing new challenges. Especially in places with high traffic density, such as near the coast, decisions must be made quickly in critical situations in order to maintain safe and smooth traffic.
Researchers at the CML are currently working on a project in which they are developing a first demonstrator for a land-based decision support system using artificial intelligence for mixed shipping traffic: LEAS stands for "Land-based decision recommendations for traffic situations with highly automated or autonomous ships" and depicts maritime traffic scenarios for which there is currently no practical experience of technical and operational requirements and procedures.
