Project Description
Background:
The maritime industry is in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, which is characterized by digitalization, big data and global networking. These developments are constantly changing business processes, but their benefits can only be realized once technical and organizational challenges have been mastered both on board and on land. There is a particular focus on environmentally friendly and low-emission ship operations. Ship operators and shipping companies are under increasing pressure to report reliable CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, as customers as well as government agencies and ports require this information for their own climate targets. However, due to the complex use of fuel on board, precise reporting of emissions is currently difficult. Automated reporting with verified data could significantly reduce the manual effort and minimize the error rate to enable reliable statements on emissions.
New solutions are needed to provide accurate data and document the results of savings efforts. The DIVMALDA project partners initiated this project to develop innovative technologies that measure and transmit validated data on current emissions automatically and in real time. The timely and accurate transmission of the data not only allows ship operators to benefit from the reduction in emissions wherever possible, but also enables well-founded trading in CO2 certificates.
Project goals:
The aim of DIVMALDA is to develop a holistic digital real-time reporting system for emissions data. The validation of the data and secure processing in the International Data Space is intended to ensure the authenticity and security of the data and its transmission and processing in such a way that the credibility of the results obtained can be accepted by authorities, companies, stakeholders and customers alike. The research project makes it possible for the first time to automate robust and reliable emission measurements on ships and to prepare and digitize them for use on land.
Tasks of the Fraunhofer CML:
The Fraunhofer CML is responsible for the validation and verification of the data at sensor level and thus ensures the conformity of the results with international regulations on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the CML is responsible for designing a suitable reporting system.
Project consortium:
SICK AG (coordinator), CPO Containerschiffreederei, Flotte Hamburg, Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Hamburg Port Authority HPA and the Fraunhofer CML.
DIVMALDA is funded as part of the Maritime Research Strategy 2025 of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection BMWK from 07.2024-06.2027.
